I have been getting questions like “how did you get into natural living?”, “How do you stay motivated to be healthy?”, and “How can I do it? It seems so hard.”
These questions usually need a longer answer than what my Instagram DM inbox can hold. So, here we are. I am going to give you the answer to these questions in a concise little list of my top five habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Most of these tips are pretty obvious but I want to get down to the why. Why are they important? Why do they lead to a healthy lifestyle? Let’s dive deep into this together!
My first tip is to exercise. “Well duh, Harley. You don’t need to tell me exercise is a healthy habit.” You’re probably right, I don’t. I find that I stay motivated to do things when I know why I’m doing them. So, let’s talk about the benefits of exercising.
Exercising can make you happier. This study claims that people who exercise, no matter the intensity level, are shown to be more enthusiastic, joyful, and more pleasant to be around. It’s a fact that raising your heart level will make you feel more positive.
The type of exercise doesn’t matter all that much. My usual workouts are HIIT workouts but a long walk through the neighborhood does the trick as well. Find what type of exercise you enjoy and do that! 🙂
Rest well. And I mean really well. Jacob and I get in bed at 9:00 pm every night. That way we can wind down and fall asleep by 9:30 at the latest. We get a full 8 hours when we wake up at 5:30 am. Then we are happy and ready to get in our prayer and workout time before getting ready for the rest of our day.
I’m not saying you must go to bed and wake up at those exact times by any means but I really encourage you to get a full eight hours of sleep if you can. I have found that using that handy little bedtime reminder on my iPhone is a great help in getting me into bed on time.
3. Drink More Water
Drinking water changed my life. I can hear you rolling your eyes. The thing is, I’m not being dramatic. It seriously did.
Before I started making drinking water a priority, I had trouble losing weight, I had low energy, and my skin would break out constantly. Someone convinced me that I should start drinking a gallon of water a day so I did. All of those thing issues improved dramatically.
I’m not saying that you’ll never have those symptoms again but I am saying that making a habit of drinking enough water will improve your body function.
My number one tip for remembering to drink water is having a large water bottle. All of my water bottles are at least 32 ounces. That way, I only have to remember to fill it up four times to drink a whole gallon but it’s not so big that i have to lug it around. This one is my favorite bottle.
Enjoy your downtime. I mean really enjoy it. When I first started the 9-5 life all I wanted to do in the evenings and on the weekends was watch tv. I quickly found that that was not the way I needed to be resting. I found that I hated going to work and wasn’t really looking forward to doing what I really enjoyed.
Along the way, I realized that resting doesn’t have to mean inactive. If anything, resting is now more about my headspace during my downtime. Do the things you enjoy. Go on hikes, to the farmers market, to the beach, write in your journal, any and all of the self-care things.
5. Be intentional with your time
This is the most helpful tip for myself. I’ve got to be honest, I ride the self-discipline struggle bus. If you do too, I encourage you to set daily goals. Write them down and go after them one by one. I write super small ones and super big ones down. Writing down the small stuff gets you into the habit of ticking things off of a list and crushing even small goals.
I find if I write things down it’s like holding myself accountable. Accountable for working out, eating certain foods, and making my bed in the morning. 🙂 It gives your day a purpose and something to accomplish.
I hope these habits help you create a healthier lifestyle. Which one will you add to your day?
